Greg's Journey started in 1986 when he was picked to be at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, he contested his first shot at the age of 29 winning 54th place in the 50 metre pistol shooting range. He was inspired by his partner Barrie Wickens, without him he wouldn't be New Zealand's best shooter.

Greg was nervous when he first started his first game, as the years passed by, he grew braver and more confident. Greg was a competitive player that trains hard before the next sport event. He was a committed player too, he started competitive pistol shooting when he only was 29, right now he is 59. All these values helped him win the gold medals and become the most award winning athlete in New Zealand.

Yelavich practices for 15 months ahead of the competitive event, it involves shooting four times a day at his own shooting range. He loves coaching kids and teaching them how to aim properly with the brass pistol. He spends $2000 worth of money to train for the last 15 months.
